The Rhode Island farmhouse case, the Warrens, and what the film invented.

Is The Conjuring based on a true story? Only loosely. The Perron family moved into a Rhode Island farmhouse in 1971 and reported strange experiences. Ed and Lorraine Warren investigated and publicised the case. The 2013 film compresses years of claims and invents much of the plot.
This post separates documented claims from fiction. It does not claim that hauntings or demons are real.
Roger and Carolyn Perron and daughters Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy and April moved into the Harrisville farmhouse in 1971. Andrea later wrote a multi-volume memoir, House of Darkness House of Light, about the years they lived there. The family stayed until about 1980.
Ed and Lorraine Warren were Connecticut-based self-styled demonologists and psychic researchers who founded the New England Society for Psychic Research. They consulted on several famous cases and kept a private Occult Museum. Sceptics have long disputed their methods and conclusions.
It is documented that the Perrons lived in the house, that they reported frightening experiences, and that the Warrens investigated and publicised the case. Whether anything supernatural occurred is a belief claim, not an established historical fact.
Is The Conjuring based on a true story? Loosely. Real people and a real house inspired a heavily fictionalised film.
Did the Warrens perform an exorcism there? Accounts describe a séance-style night that went badly; the film's exorcism climax is drama.
Is the farmhouse still standing? Yes. It has changed private owners and is not a public tourist attraction in the usual sense.
