Is The Exorcist based on a true story? Partly. William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel was inspired by a reported 1949 exorcism of a young boy from Maryland, carried out by Jesuit priests in St. Louis. Blatty changed the child to a girl and invented the story's events, and later researchers have questioned whether anything supernatural happened in the original case.

This post separates documented history from fiction. It makes no claim that possession is real.

What was the 1949 exorcism case?

In 1949 Catholic priests performed a series of exorcisms on a 14-year-old boy, documented under the pseudonyms "Roland Doe" or "Robbie Mannheim." After rites near his Maryland home failed, the family travelled to his mother's home city of St. Louis, where most of the later rites took place. The attending priest, Raymond J. Bishop, kept a record of events, and other accounts come from later interviews.

How did William Peter Blatty use the story?

Blatty first heard about the case as a student at Georgetown University. His novel moves the story to Georgetown in Washington, D.C., and centres on 12-year-old Regan MacNeil. The characters, dialogue and most events are fiction.

Did investigators find the case was real?

Writer Mark Opsasnick investigated the case for Strange Magazine in 1999. He questioned many of the supernatural claims and proposed that the boy was a disturbed child who threw deliberate tantrums. Walter Halloran, a priest who assisted at the rites, later said he was sceptical about paranormal events.

How successful was The Exorcist film?

William Friedkin's 1973 adaptation earned 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won two: Best Adapted Screenplay for Blatty and Best Sound.
