Shared false memories, from the Berenstain Bears to Darth Vader's line.

What is the Mandela effect? It is the name for a false memory shared by many people, such as remembering a logo, quote or event differently from how it really was. Writer Fiona Broome coined it after a 2009 conversation in which others shared her false memory of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s. He died in 2013.
Broome says the conversation happened at Dragon Con in 2009. She formally launched MandelaEffect.com in August 2010 to collect similar cases. Some fans explained it with parallel universes. Psychologists explain it with ordinary features of memory.
Memory is reconstructive: we rebuild memories each time we recall them, filling gaps with what seems likely. A 2022 study in Psychological Science by Deepasri Prasad and Wilma Bainbridge found people consistently misremember certain icons in the same way, which they called the "visual Mandela effect." Repetition of the wrong version online can reinforce the error.
No evidence supports that idea. It is a popular internet theory, while false memory is well documented in research.
Is the Mandela effect real? The shared false memories are real. The parallel-universe explanation is not supported.
Who named the Mandela effect? Fiona Broome, after a 2009 conversation. Her website launched in 2010.
What is the most famous example? Berenstain versus Berenstein is the most cited.
