Instagram's Edits App Now Builds Carousels: What Creators and Small Brands Should Know
Instagram's Edits app added carousel creation on Oct. 7: photos and videos on one canvas, text and layouts that span slides, saved presets, and direct publishing to Instagram. iOS first, Android coming soon. What it does, where it falls short, and seven steps for creators and small brands.

Instagram's free Edits app can now build carousel posts, Instagram announced on Oct. 7, 2026, letting creators mix photos, videos and text on one canvas and publish straight to Instagram. Edits launched in April 2025 as a video editor, so this is the first time it handles Instagram's multi-slide format.
The feature is on iOS now, with Android "coming soon." For creators and small brands that design carousels in a separate app and then upload them, it's one less step. Here's what it does, where it falls short, and how to make better carousels with it.
What did Instagram add?
According to PetaPixel and The Verge, which both covered the launch on Oct. 7, the new carousel editor lets you:
- Combine photos and videos in a single carousel, arranged on a custom canvas.
- Add text, layouts, stickers, filters and adjustments, using tools Edits already had plus new ones built for carousels.
- Let a photo or headline run across more than one slide, so swiping becomes part of the story.
- Color grade, scale and rotate each element.
- Reuse presets you saved in Edits, including image and video adjustments, colors, audio and text styles.
- Share directly from Edits to Instagram, or download the carousel to post later.
To start, open Edits, go to the Projects tab, tap the plus button and choose Carousel. The Times of India reported that custom stickers made from cutouts are supported too.
"When we asked creators what they hoped Edits could do next, carousels came up again and again," Dan Moreno, a design engineer on Instagram's Edits team, said in the announcement quoted by PetaPixel. "Your visual identity is how people know a post is yours, and now it extends to the carousels you make in Edits."
Why does it matter?
PetaPixel calls carousels an extremely popular Instagram format, especially for photographers who want to share a set of related images at once. Until now, many creators designed them in third-party tools, exported each slide and uploaded them separately. BuzzInContent noted that the update puts Edits in closer competition with Canva for creators who mostly publish to Instagram, while Canva still offers a broader range of templates, brand management and collaboration tools.
The bigger point is consistency. Saved presets mean your Reels and your carousels can share the same colors, fonts and text styles without rebuilding them each time. For a small brand, that is the difference between a feed that looks like one business and a feed that looks like five.
What are the limits?
- It's iOS only for now. Android users will have to wait.
- It's built for Instagram. Edits publishes to Instagram, and you can download the result, but it isn't a cross-platform planning tool.
- It's not a team tool. None of the launch coverage mentions team approvals or shared workspaces.
- Good tools don't fix weak ideas. A carousel still needs a reason to swipe: a story, a list, a before and after, or a step-by-step.
How do you make a carousel people actually swipe?
A few habits work regardless of the tool:
- Put the promise on slide one. Tell people what they'll get if they keep swiping, such as "5 ways to style one jacket."
- Give each slide one job. One idea, one image, one line of text.
- Use the new spanning feature on purpose. A photo or headline that crosses slides works best as a hook between slide one and slide two, not on every slide.
- Mix in a short video. A three-to-five-second clip in the middle of a carousel can show motion or scale that photos can't.
- End with a clear next step. Save, share, comment or visit your profile.
- Reuse what works. If a Reel performed well, turn its key points into a carousel with the same preset.
What does this mean for small brands?
If you sell products, carousels are useful for showing a product from several angles, comparing options, or walking through how to use something. With Edits handling both video and carousels, you can build a product Reel and a matching carousel from the same clips in one app.
Brands working with creators should also update their briefs. Ask whether a creator plans a Reel, a carousel or both, and agree on which one you'll reuse. We covered how brands and creators are setting up deals in our post on Advertising Week's creator deal push.
What should you do this week?
- Update Edits on iOS and try one carousel. Rebuild a recent post you already designed elsewhere and compare the time it takes.
- Save your presets. Set your colors, fonts and text styles once, so every Reel and carousel matches.
- Turn one strong Reel into a carousel. Use its main points as slides and add a short clip from the original video.
- Write slide one first. If the opening slide doesn't make someone want to swipe, the rest won't get seen.
- Keep your source files. Download each carousel so you can repost it or adapt it for other platforms.
- Track saves and shares. Those tell you more about a carousel's value than likes alone.
- If you're on Android, prepare the assets now so you're ready when support arrives.
