A Photoshop contest entry that turned into modern internet folklore.

Is Slender Man real? No. Slender Man is a fictional character created in June 2009 by Eric Knudsen, posting as "Victor Surge," for a Something Awful forum contest to edit ordinary photos so they looked paranormal. His two doctored playground photos, showing a tall, faceless figure in a suit, spread from there into wider internet folklore.
This post is about a work of fiction. Slender Man has never existed outside stories, games and films.
Knudsen added the figure to two black-and-white photos of children and wrote short captions implying the pictures came from a library fire and missing children. The captions were fiction written for the contest, but the format of found photos plus vague notes made the figure feel documented.
Each new creator added traits such as long arms, tentacles and a habit of stalking forests, so the "legend" grew without a single author.
Scholars treat him as internet folklore. Professor Shira Chess of the University of Georgia co-wrote a book on the subject, Folklore, Horror Stories, and the Slender Man: The Development of an Internet Mythology. Like an old legend, the story was passed on and changed by many people, but on forums instead of by word of mouth. Fake "evidence" such as edited photos was part of the game from day one.
