What is the singularity? In technology, it is a hypothetical future point when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and begins improving itself so fast that what comes next becomes impossible to predict. The idea runs from I.J. Good's 1965 intelligence explosion through Vernor Vinge's 1993 essay to Ray Kurzweil's forecast of 2045.

It is a concept and a set of predictions, not an established scientific fact. This post explains the idea; it does not forecast when or whether it will happen.

Where does the idea come from?

  • 1965: statistician I.J. Good described an "intelligence explosion": an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines, leaving human intelligence far behind
  • 1993: science-fiction writer and mathematician Vernor Vinge's essay The Coming Technological Singularity argued that superhuman intelligence would end the human era as we know it, and guessed it would arrive between 2005 and 2030
  • 2005 onward: futurist Ray Kurzweil popularised a date of 2045 in The Singularity Is Near, and kept it in his 2024 follow-up The Singularity Is Nearer

Why is it called a singularity?

The term borrows from maths and physics, where a singularity is a point at which a model breaks down, as at the centre of a black hole. Vinge's point was that beyond such a moment, our current ways of predicting the future stop working.

Is the singularity going to happen?

Nobody knows. Supporters point to rapid progress in AI and computing. Critics argue that intelligence may not scale that smoothly, that hardware, energy and data impose limits, or that progress may be gradual rather than a single runaway moment. Treat any specific date as a forecast, not a fact.

FAQ

Is the singularity the same as AGI? No. Artificial general intelligence means AI with broadly human-level ability. The singularity is a proposed runaway change that some people think could follow it.

Who coined the term? John von Neumann is reported to have used "singularity" for accelerating technological change in the 1950s; Vinge made the modern meaning famous.

What is a gravitational singularity? A different idea from physics: a point of infinite density predicted by general relativity, such as the centre of a black hole.

What I found running this

Facts in this draft were checked on 14 Oct 2026 against the sources listed in the body (official records, publishers, encyclopaedias, research papers and named news outlets). No original testing or reporting was done; figures are quoted as published by those sources, fiction and folklore are labelled as such, and any estimate or prediction is labelled as such.
