Freeman Dyson's 1960 idea, the Type II link, and why every candidate so far fizzled.

What is a Dyson sphere? It is a hypothetical megastructure: a huge swarm of orbiting collectors that surrounds a star to capture most of its energy. Physicist Freeman Dyson described the idea in a 1960 Science paper, suggesting astronomers search for the waste heat such structures would give off as infrared light. None has been found.
This post covers a scientific concept. No Dyson sphere is known to exist.
Dyson's 1960 paper, "Search for Artificial Stellar Sources of Infrared Radiation," proposed the search. He was inspired by Olaf Stapledon's 1937 science-fiction novel Star Maker. Dyson pictured a loose collection or swarm of objects, and later said a solid shell around a star would be mechanically impossible.
A Dyson swarm is many separate satellites or panels orbiting a star. Most scientists consider it the only realistic version. A solid shell would face impossible stresses.
A civilisation capturing its entire star's energy would count as Type II on the Kardashev scale, which is why Dyson spheres are the classic example of that level.
Is a Dyson sphere possible? Building one is far beyond humanity's current engineering and industrial capacity.
Did Dyson imagine a solid shell? No. He considered a solid shell mechanically impossible.
Why look for infrared? Any structure absorbing starlight must release heat, which shows up in infrared.
