The hard limit is 100 characters. The useful length is shorter, and here is why.

A YouTube title can be up to 100 characters long, according to YouTube Help. In practice, keep the main promise in the first few words, because long titles are often cut off in search results, suggested videos and on phones, where many people watch.
YouTube Studio caps video titles at 100 characters, and the Shorts upload screen uses the same 100-character maximum.
YouTube does not publish a "best" length, and how much shows depends on the screen and where the video appears. Front-loading the topic means viewers see what matters even when the end is truncated. This is a practical guideline, not a YouTube rule.
Read the title on a phone preview. If the meaning disappears when the end is cut, move the key words forward.
