On Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, TikTok announced Buy Direct, a one-click checkout that lets people buy from a brand straight from the For You feed, and Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent that answers product questions, TechCrunch and Adweek reported. Two days later, at Advertising Week New York, the company added the TikTok Advertising Network: about 400,000 outside apps with a combined 1 billion daily active users, according to The Drum.

Put together, TikTok wants the whole path from video to paid order to happen inside its app, and not only inside TikTok Shop. Here is what was announced, who can use it today, and what sellers and creators should do about it before the holidays.

What did TikTok announce?

TikTok describes Shopping Assistant as an agent that remembers a shopper's preferences during a conversation and gives guidance on product details, shipping, sizing and availability, plus help finishing a purchase, per TechCrunch. Buy Direct sits next to it: a shopper taps once in the feed and buys from the brand without leaving the app.

The key detail is that Buy Direct is separate from TikTok Shop, the in-house marketplace that launched in the US in September 2023. TikTok said both features are being built with commerce and payment partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. "We're trying to move people from discovery all the way through to action," David Kaufman, TikTok's global head of monetization and product partnerships, told reporters in New York, per Adweek.

The Oct. 7 announcements, reported by The Drum, added:

  • The TikTok Advertising Network, with 44 of the top 100 US gaming apps among its 400,000 apps.
  • A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects AI platforms, including Claude and Perplexity, to its ads environment.
  • Agentic lead-generation tools.

Who can use Buy Direct right now?

Not everyone. Adweek reported the features are "beginning to roll out to users and brands in the U.S." Agentic Commerce Brief, an industry newsletter, reported that both are in invitation-only testing for advertisers, with access through a TikTok sales contact, and that TikTok has named no fees or dates.

The plumbing matters too. Salesforce, one of the launch partners, says Buy Direct runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and that brands remain the merchant of record. In practice that means the brand keeps the customer's contact details, handles service and returns, and can follow up by email. Salesforce expects its own phased rollout of UCP-powered checkout to begin in Q1 2027, with a native TikTok Shop integration generally available in January 2027. If you are on a smaller platform, assume your timeline depends on that platform, not on TikTok.

Why does it matter?

TikTok is already a big shopping channel. Its own Economic Impact Report, published the week before, says platform activity helped generate $81 billion in GDP for US businesses and that 54 million Americans have bought something after watching a TikTok video, TechCrunch reported. The research firm eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop did about $15.8 billion in US sales in 2025, roughly 18% of US social commerce. Salesforce's Shopping Index found 27% of consumers bought on a social shopping platform in the past three months, led by 48% of Gen Z.

Two shifts follow. First, the video becomes the storefront: if checkout happens in the feed, the clip has to do the work a product page used to do. Second, the assistant answers from the product data a brand supplies. Missing sizing, vague shipping times or unclear returns turn into weak answers at the exact moment someone is ready to buy.

What happens next?

  • Late October: Best Buy opens on TikTok Shop with nearly 10,000 products, from headphones and cameras to small appliances, and invites creators to make shoppable videos and photos, according to Best Buy.
  • Now through the holidays: Buy Direct stays in limited testing as far as public reports show, while TikTok Shop keeps running as before.
  • Q1 2027: Salesforce's UCP checkout rollout is expected to begin.

What should sellers and creators do this week?

  1. Fix your product data first. Write out materials, who the product is for, sizing advice, delivery cost and time, stock by variant and the returns window, as text on the product page and in your catalog feed. That is what any shopping assistant has to work with.
  2. Ask before you rebuild. If you advertise on TikTok, ask your rep whether you qualify for the Buy Direct test and what order reporting you would get. If you are on Shopify or Salesforce, check their agentic or TikTok channel settings. Don't tear up a working TikTok Shop setup for a test you can't join yet.
  3. Make one explainer per hero product. A 20- to 40-second vertical clip that shows how it works, what size to pick and what comes in the box answers the same questions the assistant will get. Clear explainers also travel well to YouTube Shorts and Reels.
  4. Creators: line up holiday partners now. Best Buy's late-October launch is one new catalog to pitch against. Label every paid or gifted post clearly; the FTC's Disclosures 101 guide for influencers spells out how.
  5. Measure the channel. Tag your links, and compare conversion and return rates for in-app orders against your own site before moving budget.

For step 3, if you don't film, an animated explainer is a fast stand-in. InstaDoodle says on its sales page that it builds doodle-style explainer videos from text prompts and exports 16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for Stories and square for feeds. VidToon is a desktop 2D animation app with drag-and-drop characters and any output resolution you pick. We covered how VidToon fits product pages in our VidToon explainer video guide. Tools that help

  • InstaDoodle: AI doodle and explainer videos from text prompts. Per its sales page, it is sold as a one-time lifetime deal (the price is shown at checkout) with a 60-day money-back guarantee, and it lists product promotion and Amazon product review videos among its uses. • VidToon: 2D animated explainer maker. Per its sales page, it is a desktop app for Windows or Mac, exports Full HD, includes a commercial license, and is offered at a $49 one-time payment, which the page says will later switch to $67 a month. VidToon link: Open link
