Nuvei FTC $4.85M payment-processor settlement (4 Sep 2026)

On 4 September 2026, the Federal Trade Commission announced that global payment processor Nuvei will pay $4.85 million to settle charges that the firm opened and maintained payment processing accounts for merchants it knew or should have known were engaged in deception—including tech-support scams that took millions of dollars from consumers. ShopperCove is not a party to the case, has not held a Nuvei merchant account, and has not contacted Nuvei or FTC staff for this article. The facts below come from the FTC’s 4 September 2026 press release, the Nuvei case page, the complaint PDF and stipulated order PDF linked from that page, and the Joint Statement of Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson and Commissioner Mark R. Meador, all read on 5 October 2026. Complaint theories are allegations unless a court has already adjudicated them. Case status on the FTC page as of sources read: Pending. This is not legal advice.

Who the FTC sued

Named defendants in the case caption (from the case page):

  • Nuvei Corporation (Canada)
  • Nuvei International Group Limited (formerly SafeCharge International Group Limited; Guernsey)
  • Nuvei Limited (formerly SafeCharge Limited; Cyprus)
  • SafeCharge Digital Limited (Cyprus)
  • Nuvei Technologies Inc. (Delaware)

Venue: U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. The Commission vote authorizing staff to file the complaint and stipulated order was 2–0. The joint statement lists Matter 2223153.

What the FTC alleged

From the press release and joint statement (allegations):

  • Nuvei processed payments for scammers, including tech-support schemes targeting U.S. consumers.
  • Specifically, Nuvei allegedly processed more than $30 million in consumer payments for Reimage, an offshore tech-support scam, from 2017 to 2023.
  • Through a merchant-acquiring bank registered in Cyprus, Nuvei allegedly furnished Reimage and other overseas deceptive tech-support schemes with accounts that enabled credit-card payments from U.S. cardholders.
  • Nuvei’s U.S. subsidiary allegedly also opened/maintained accounts for merchants selling business opportunities with false or baseless earnings claims (example cited: DK Automation), merchants impersonating government tax authorities (example cited: American Tax Service), and merchants other processors or banks had previously terminated for excessive chargebacks or fraud.
  • Charges include unfair payment-processing practices under the FTC Act and assisting/facilitating deceptive telemarketers under the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR).

The FTC previously took action against Reimage operators (2024) and sued Europe-based processor Paddle over alleged facilitation of Reimage via a “merchant of record” platform. Those are separate matters; this package is about Nuvei.

What the stipulated order requires (high level)

From the press release and stipulated order:

  • $4.85 million monetary judgment / payment to the Commission for consumer redress.
  • Ban on providing payment services to anyone selling tech-support products/services by telemarketing or by pop-up messages about security or device-performance issues.
  • Prohibition on false or misleading statements to obtain merchant accounts / payment processing for itself or others, and on tactics to avoid fraud or risk monitoring (including load balancing).
  • Requirements to screen and monitor existing and prospective clients (including certain high-risk categories such as outbound telemarketing) and to conduct enhanced screening when chargeback rates exceed order limits.
  • Case-page timeline also lists an Order dated 10 September 2026 in addition to the 4 September 2026 complaint and stipulated order—read the case page for the latest PDF set.

Who gets paid — and who does not (yet)

  • The press release says the $4.85 million will be used to provide consumer redress.
  • As of sources read 5 October 2026, the press release and case page do not publish a live public claim form or “check your eligibility” portal for this settlement.
  • Do not treat cold DMs, “Nuvei refund portal” lookalikes, or paid “claim facilitators” as official until an FTC redress page says otherwise.
  • Report fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Why ShopperCove is covering this

October FTC coverage on ShopperCove already includes fuel-card fees (FleetCor/Corpay), subscriptions (Amazon Prime), Robinson-Patman (Southern Glazer’s), junk fees (Lens.com), and MLM/loyalty matters. Nuvei is the same window’s payment-processor case: how acquiring/processing can allegedly keep scam merchants on the rails—especially tech-support pop-up/telemarketing schemes. Not a CPSC recall; primary sources are FTC press + case filings. (Sibling Sep 2026 processor matter Humboldt Merchant Services / $12M is a separate package candidate—this post stays on Nuvei.)

Bottom line

As of 5 October 2026, Nuvei and named subsidiaries have a stipulated FTC order with a $4.85 million monetary judgment over alleged facilitation of deceptive merchants (including Reimage tech-support payments). Filed in D. Arizona; FTC case status Pending; redress intended for consumers; no public claim form in the press package yet. Read the press release and case page. No affiliate.

What I found running this

Sources read 5 Oct 2026 (Asia/Calcutta) via WebFetch: FTC press 4 Sep 2026; case page https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/cases-proceedings/nuvei (status Pending; timeline includes 4 Sep complaint + stipulated order and 10 Sep Order); complaint theories labeled as allegations. No Nuvei merchant account held; no purchase; no claim form found in press package. Matter referenced in Ferguson/Meador joint statement as 2223153. Diversifies vs FleetCor/Amway/Corteva/Southern Glazer’s/Lens.com/Amazon Prime—payment-processor facilitation of scam merchants, not CPSC.
