YouTube Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long if the video is square or vertical, but there is no single ideal length. Make each Short only as long as the idea needs. Stay under 1 minute when you rely on claimed music, because Shorts over a minute with an active Content ID claim are blocked worldwide.
The current limit: up to 3 minutes
For standard channels, any square or vertical video up to three minutes uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 is classified as a Short and can earn through Shorts revenue sharing. Videos uploaded before that date keep their original classification. For Official Artist Channels, the cut-off is 8 December 2025. You can upload three-minute Shorts from the YouTube app or YouTube Studio.
The 1-minute line still matters for music and claims
- If a Short is longer than 1 minute and has an active Content ID claim of any type, including a manual claim, it is blocked globally. It won't play, won't be recommended and won't earn money.
- Your channel is not penalised. You can remove the claimed content or dispute the claim, and the Short becomes viewable again once the claim is resolved.
- Most Shorts Audio Library tracks can be used for up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short, but some are capped at 60 or 30 seconds.
- Royalty-free tracks from the YouTube Audio Library won't receive a Content ID claim.
How views and earnings count
Since 31 March 2025, a Shorts view counts every time a Short starts playing or replays, with no minimum watch time. The old definition is now called engaged views, and it is what Shorts revenue sharing and YouTube Partner Program eligibility use. Engaged views appear in Advanced Mode in YouTube Analytics. A longer Short does not earn more per view. Revenue from the Creator Pool is split by your share of engaged views in each country, so length only helps if people keep watching.
Pick the length by format
- Single tip, reaction or product reveal: keep it under 60 seconds. This also keeps you clear of the block rule for claimed audio.
- Tutorial, before/after or list: 1 to 3 minutes is now allowed, but use only original or royalty-free audio.
- Anything longer than 3 minutes: publish it as a regular long-form video and use a Short to point viewers to it.
Check retention before going longer
In YouTube Analytics, open a Short's audience retention and compare engaged views with total views. If viewers drop off before the payoff, trim the intro and lead with the result. If they watch to the end, test a longer version on the next upload. Compare Shorts published before 31 March 2025 using engaged views, as YouTube recommends, so the view-count change doesn't skew the comparison.
A quick pre-upload checklist
- Use a vertical (9:16) or square aspect ratio, and keep it 3:00 or shorter.
- If it is over 1:00, make sure there is no third-party music or footage that could be claimed.
- Put the hook in the first seconds, since every replay now counts as a view but only engaged views pay.
- Check that the Shorts monetization module is accepted if you want revenue. Views from before you accepted don't count.

FAQ
What is the maximum length of a YouTube Short?
Three minutes, for square or vertical videos uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 on standard channels.
Why was my 2-minute Short blocked?
Shorts longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim are blocked globally. Remove the claimed audio or footage, or dispute the claim if it is wrong.
Do longer Shorts make more money?
Not directly. Shorts revenue is shared based on engaged views, not watch time per Short, so a longer Short only helps if it earns more engaged views.
