Astro 7.3: multi preview servers, image/cache logger, Cloudflare finalize() (3 Sep 2026)

On 3 September 2026, the Astro team published Astro 7.3. The official Astro 7.3 blog post adds an --ignore-lock escape hatch for astro preview, passes Astro’s runtime logger into custom image services and cache providers, and ships a finalize() helper in @astrojs/cloudflare for custom worker entrypoints. ShopperCove did not upgrade a production Astro site or run @astrojs/upgrade for this note. Package versions below were confirmed on the npm registry on 5 October 2026 (astro@7.3.0 published 3 Sep 2026; latest patch on the 7.3 line as of that check: astro@7.3.5). This is a docs-based upgrade checklist—not a migration log for ShopperCove’s own stack.

Headline features (from the official 7.3 post)

Multiple astro preview servers (--ignore-lock)

Astro 7.1 added --ignore-lock to astro dev so agents (and humans) could run more than one dev server without fighting the lockfile. Astro 7.2 added that lockfile to astro preview but without the same escape hatch. 7.3 closes the gap:

astro preview --ignore-lock

The blog post calls out Playwright / E2E setups that need more than one preview at once. Those instances run independently—they are meant for quick one-off servers, not ones you manage with astro preview stop / status.

Logger for custom image services and cache providers

Custom image services and cache providers previously had to use console.warn(), which ignores Astro’s configured log level, destination, and --silent. 7.3 passes a logger into both extension points (shown in the official post):

  • Image services: logger as an argument to hooks such as transform(...).
  • Cache providers: logger on the context passed to onRequest(...).

Astro’s built-in Sharp image service and memoryCache() provider were updated to use the same logger path.

Cloudflare finalize() for custom fetch handlers

@astrojs/cloudflare adds finalize() so a custom worker entrypoint can apply cookies and Cloudflare CDN cache defaults to the response from an astro/fetch pipeline. The official example imports finalize from @astrojs/cloudflare/fetch and returns finalize(state, await astro(state)) after optional cf(...) asset handling. With Hono, @astrojs/cloudflare/hono middleware applies those headers automatically—no extra call.

Upgrade checklist

  1. Inventory: check lockfile / npm ls astro (and @astrojs/cloudflare if used). If you are below 7.3.0, schedule the bump in staging.
  2. Upgrade: prefer npx @astrojs/upgrade, or install astro@latest / your package manager’s upgrade equivalent (per the 7.3 post).
  3. Preview / E2E: if CI or local Playwright needs parallel previews, add --ignore-lock deliberately—do not disable the lock everywhere by habit.
  4. Custom image/cache plugins: switch console.warn paths to the injected logger so --silent and log routing stay consistent.
  5. Cloudflare custom workers: if you own the fetch entrypoint (not only Hono middleware), adopt finalize() so cookies / CDN defaults match Astro’s pipeline.

ShopperCove did not change production Astro versions for this article. Follow the Astro 7.3 announcement and the CHANGELOG.

Bottom line

Astro 7.3 (3 Sep 2026) is a practical toolchain refresh: astro preview --ignore-lock, a shared runtime logger for image/cache extensions, and Cloudflare finalize() for custom workers. Pin astro@7.3.0+ (patch 7.3.5 was current on npm when checked 5 Oct 2026) when ready. Prefer the official 7.3 post over third-party roundups.
